Raymond Tennis

June 10, 1927 — October 21, 2013

A loving husband of sixty-two years, Raymond O. Tennis, passed away Oct. 21, 2013. Memorial services will be at 2 pm, Sat., Oct. 26 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055; interment at Blue Springs Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 pm before the service. The family suggests contributions to Crossroads Hospice, 9237 Ward Pkwy., Kansas City, MO 64114.
Raymond was born in Kansas City, MO but lived all his life in Independence, MO. He was born June 10, 1927 to William Otis Tennis and Emma (Keaton) Tennis. After graduation from William Chrisman High School Raymond and some of his friends joined the Navy in 1945. His mother had to go on stage to accept his high school diploma. He was called back to the Navy in 1950 during the Korean War and was stationed in Alameda, CA. He came home in 1951 to marry Marie Williams. They lived in CA until he was discharged from the Navy. The couple made their home in Independence and raised two daughters. Raymond enjoyed being with all of his family. They hosted many get-togethers and parties for birthday and holiday celebrations. Raymond built and flew model airplanes in his younger days and loved to fish and hunt with his dad. He retired from Natkin Service in 1989 as a pipefitter in Union Local #553. After his retirement he and Marie took their two older grandson, Matt and Toby, fishing.
Raymond was preceded in death by nephew Steve Christenson. He is survived by his wife Marie; daughters Vicky Sutherland and Lisa Tennis; grandsons Toby Sutherland, Jr. and wife Melissa; Matt Hendley and wife Melissa; Zach Sutherland; granddaughters Sarah Sutherland; Emily Fortier and husband Stephen; great-grandchildren Casen, Kendall, DaQuane, DaVion, Jasmine & Moneesha Sutherland; Juliet Madelyn & Scarlet Elizabeth Hendley; Annabelle Autumn Fortier; sister Shirley Christenson and husband Neil; niece Ilene Christenson and nephew Bob Christenson and wife Shelly.
We wish to thank Crossroads Hospice and the Visiting Nurse Association for their wonderful care.
