Having lived a life full of loving commitment to faith, family, and friends, we mourn the passing of Theo D. Scott, affectionately known as "Ted" to those who knew him best. Ted was born on September 25, 1936, in Petoskey, Michigan, to his loving parents Theo K. and A. Beryl Scott.
Throughout his career, Ted served as a Speech Pathologist for the Independence School District before transitioning to Assistant Principal at Palmer Jr. High and eventually finding his true passion as an English Professor at Oakland Community College for 27 years. His impact on his students' lives resonates in the countless hearts he has touched through his teachings.
Described as humble, charming, smart, observant and loving, Ted’s warm personality left a lasting impression on all who crossed paths with him whether for a moment, or a life-time.
Ted’s faith was a guiding light in his life and he enjoyed serving his God, church, and others in a variety of ministries-teaching, playing piano, singing, & preaching, and in a variety of roles: Pastor, Elder, Member of High Council of Detroit International Stake, High Priest, and Member of the 70. His membership in several Detroit and Missouri congregations helped him build a family of faith around the world.
Amongst all his loves: music, art, history, travel, reading, puzzles, card & board games, picnics, food etc. Ted always regarded "his family" as his greatest treasure-from Michigan to Missouri, from Kansas to Australia. He shared his life journey of learning and serving with his beloved wife Hazel Scott, whose unwavering support was at the heart of Ted’s success and happiness. He also leaves behind a legacy carried on by his family.
In his leisure time, reading brought Ted immense joy and intellectual fulfillment. His passion for literature and studying the Bible reflected his deep appreciation for learning and knowledge. Ted was a long-time member of the Optimist Club and faithfully attended Community of Christ Good Shepherd for many years, recently attending Beacon Heights Congregation.
Ted is survived by his son, David K. (Ronda) Scott; grandchildren, Theo J. “TJ” Scott, Ainslee Scott, Samuel Scott; niece, Cheryl (John) Kennedy; extended family and dear friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Scott; parents Theo “Scotty” K. and Beryl Scott; and sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Sigman.
A memorial service will take place at Good Shepherd Community of Christ Church on Thursday, May 30th from noon-1pm with a visitation directly preceding from 11am-11:50. A private family inurnment will take place at Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, Missouri immediately following the services.
On May 26th, 2024, in Independence, Missouri, the world lost a remarkable soul whose memory will continue to live on through the countless lives he has influenced and inspired. Ted Scott’s profound impact on his family, friends, and anyone blessed enough to cross his path will forever remain a cherished part of his enduring legacy.
