Mary Ann Thompson, 90, Independence, MO passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014. Mary was born June 20, 1924 in Milwaukee, WI the daughter of Filippo and Josephine (Alessi) Vitrano. She received her B.S. in Nursing from University of Kansas and Masters in Education from University of Missouri. Mary was a dedicated and passionate caregiver and volunteer all of her life. Mary’s life work spans many years to include being a Cadet Nurse in WWII, and nurse educator, Director of post high school Health Occupation programs with the Independence and Kansas City School districts and Director of Education Services at the IRHC. She was preceded in death by her husband Nyal Thompson in 1997; five sisters; four brothers; and her parents. Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Ann Wilcoxen (Kurt); son, David J. Thompson (Tamera); grandchildren, Marshall Wilder (Sandy), and Brianna Thompson; four great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sister, Rosemary McCarthy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and family. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2014 with the rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church; 611 N. Liberty St., Independence, MO 64050. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or St. Jude’s Hospital.
