John Wesley Thornton, Jr., 86, Independence, MO passed away Sept. 29, 2012. Services will be 10 am, Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055 followed by a committal service at 2:30 pm, at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at the chapel.
John was born Nov. 10, 1925 in Kansas City, MO. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BS in chemistry and worked as the chief chemist at the Armco Steel Plant from 1953 until his retirement in 1986. He loved to fish the strip pits near Pittsburg and Lake Taneycomo in Missouri. He was a Civil War history buff and loved to travel with his wife. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II.
John is survived by his wife of sixty-six years Wilma Thornton, of the home; son John L. Thornton and wife Barbara, Bradenton, FL; grandchildren Wes Thornton and wife Angela, Overland Park, KS; Lindsay Wiles, M.D. and husband Nathan, Lithia, FL; great-grandchildren Hannah Grace, Austin and Gabby Wiles.
