Norma Travis, 91, of Independence, MO passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time. Norma was born July 7, 1923, in Donora, PA as the only child to Wilford and Frida (Valentine) Gaskill. She graduated from a local high school and attended Graceland College for her Associates Degree. Norma then moved to New York to work for the airlines so that she could see the world. She was eventually promoted to Chief Stewardess with Pan Am Airlines. She traveled to countries in all regions and even lived in Pakistan while training the first wave of stewards for Pakistan Air. In 1964, she married R. C. Travis and moved to Kentucky where they gave birth to their son, Richey. After a brief marriage she returned to school to become a teacher. With her Bachelors’ Degree from Pitt she relocated to Fairfax, VA where she taught until 1990. During that time she earned her Doctorate of Education from Virginia Tech. After retirement, in the 1990’s she moved to Independence to be closer to her church. Norma was a life long, devoted member of the RLDS now Community of Christ Church. As an active member she volunteered for numerous congregational activities as well as regular conferences at the temple. She is remembered as an incredibly independent woman with a strong drive and determination.
She leaves behind her son, Richey Travis and daughter-in-law, Erin MacEachen Travis of Amherst, MA.
