Alan Dean Tyree

Alan Dean Tyree, 92, of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. An on-line Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm Central Standard Time Sunday, October 16, 2022. Details will be shared when they become available.

Alan was born December 14, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Clarence T. and Avis O. (Gross) Tyree, the eldest of two sons. He married Gladys Louise Omohundro on November 23, 1951.

Survivors include children Lawrence Wayne Tyree and wife L. Rene Tyree, and Sharon Avis Tyree; grandchildren Kathryn Marie (Tyree) Zimmerman and husband Aaron Zimmerman, Matthew Alexander Tyree and wife Andrea Tyree, and Michael Jon Tyree; and great grandchildren Elijah, Oliver, and Arthur Zimmerman. He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, son Jonathan, and brother Ronald.

After graduating from High School in Moline, Illinois, Alan received a degree in music from the University of Iowa. He met and married his wife Gladys while both worked at the Community of Christ headquarters, Independence, MO. The family served as missionaries in French Polynesia from 1953 to 1964 where Alan became fluent in Tahitian and French. Alan was called to the Council of Twelve Apostles in 1966 where he served for sixteen years until becoming a member of the First Presidency of the Church in 1982. He traveled extensively throughout the world before retiring from full time ministry in 1992. Alan was an excellent musician and was known for his performances using saxophone, oboe, or bassoon - often accompanied by his wife Gladys.

The family encourages contributions to Community of Christ Temple Endowment Fund in lieu of flowers.
