Norman Charles Van Tassel, 90, formerly of Independence, MO passed away peacefully in hospice care on the morning of March 18, 2014. A visitation will be held from 1-2:00 p.m. followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Graveside will take place at Blue Springs Cemetery. Norman was born in Hastain, MO to Arthur and Maud Van Tassel. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the infantry as a medic for the duration of the war - from the Battle of Normandy to the liberation of German concentration camps. After his duty, he returned home to Hastain, where he married his wife, Genevieve in 1946. He later joined the Air Force, in which he served at a paratrooper and para-rescue specialist for the next 23 years earning multiple commendations and ascending to the rank of Chief Master Sargent. After his military career, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UMKC and worked as an insurance auditor until retirement. Norman was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Genevieve (Weter) Van Tassel, who died in 2000; and one brother, Clyde Van Tassel. He is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Maggio, Susan Wray and Jane Van Tassel, all who live in the Kansas City area; one son, John Van Tassel of Chicago, IL; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
