Vernon Austin Allen, Jr.
January 28, 1949 - December 24, 2023
Vernon Allen, of Independence, Missouri, was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Vernon and Fern Allen. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. Upon entering college at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, he met Dorothy Winegar, who would become the love of his life. They were married and remained so 54 years until his passing.
Over the course of his lifetime, Vern was a schoolteacher, accountant and eventually a college professor. Changes in occupation drew Vern and Dottie to Florida, where they lived for much of their married life. He achieved a Master’s degree in accounting from Florida State University. Following his retirement from teaching at Central Florida Community College in Ocala, he and Dorothy retired to Independence.
He had a keen sense of humor and wit, and a bright intellect, all traits which served him well as an accountant, teacher and conversationalist.
Vern was a faithful servant of the Lord. He was a lifelong, dedicated member of the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ and served as priesthood, eventually being called to the office of Elder. For several years, he led a restoration church group in central Florida and provided strong and much needed spiritual leadership for restoration church members there.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, two brothers, Stanley and Daniel, one sister, Judith, many nieces and nephews, and numerous lifelong friends. He will be greatly missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, please make your donations to Tunnels to Towers in Vern’s name.
