Billy Gene Wagner

Billy Gene Wagner, Sr., of Independence, Missouri, passed away on December 16, 2021 at the age of 90. He was born on July 23, 1931 in Edwardsville, Kansas, to Lillie Ann (Gore) Wagner and Ira Washington Wagner. A Korean War era U.S. Army veteran, he earned the rank of Private First Class while serving in Germany. A graduate of William Chrisman High School and Finley Engineering College, he earned recognition as a Professional Engineer (PE). In 1952 he married Constance (Connie) Diane Griffin, with whom he raised three children: Billy Gene Wagner, Jr., Brett Griffin Wagner, and Claudia (Chloe) Irene Wagner.

With the help of his wife Connie, he launched the highly-successful trash removal business Wagner Enterprises in 1970, which prospered for 30 years before its sale in 2000. His proudest achievement, Bill ran the shop while Connie ran the office. Following his retirement, he devoted much of his time to assisting the homeless, even welcoming them at times into his home. A man of deep religious faith, he was a member for many years at the South Crysler RLDS church, before following his spiritual journey to many other faith communities.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years and his first born son, Billy. He is survived by his other two children, Brett and Chloe. After a courageous battle with long-term dementia and COVID-19, he passed peacefully at Research Medical Center. The family wishes to thank the incredible medical team there for their dedicated care and compassionate help in facilitating every opportunity for the family to spend as much time with him as possible, right up until the end.
