Joan Sherman Wallace, daughter of Kenneth and Alpha Sherman , passed away after a long struggle with dementia. Joan is survived by her nine children; Tim Patterson (Marli ), Steven Patterson (Patti), Janna Wright (Mike), Wendy Fergerson (Matt), David Patterson (Laurie), Doug Patterson, Mark Sherman, and Mary Patterson. She leaves behind sixteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a great great grandchild as well as two sisters; Pat Chadwick(Hal) and Barbara Shupe (Ronnie).
Joan worked at DST for many years and attended the Plaza Heights Baptist Church.
We are reassured that Joan was joyfully welcomed into heaven, as she lived her faith and set a quiet example for those around her. Joan always went beyond simple gestures of kindness. For example, she didn’t just sponsor an Indian family on the reservation , she went to visit them as well.
When she volunteered at a nursing home, she brought home a beautiful, brilliant six year old girl who was locked in a body that didn’t work and loved her with all her heart. She rescued a second child from that home with even greater disabilities.
She tried to right the world for another abandoned child through a foreign adoption.
Most people point out when something is wrong, but our mother taught us to get up and do something about it. Lives have been forever impacted and changed because of the things she did herself and the lessons she taught us.
Joan had opinions but she rarely voiced them. However , tucked away in a drawer or being used as a book mark, most of her inner circle has a card or letter that she wrote to them. She had a way with words, she saw people clearly, and was able to say things that made you want to read those words later.
We know that heaven is a wonderful place, full of wonderful souls and we are happy that our mother is now restored to her whole self and is among them.
A celebration of life gathering will be held at 1:00 PM, January 15th at the Gamber Community Center. 4SE Independence Ave, Lee’s Summit, MO. Food will be served.
