Dan S. Washburn, Sr., 84 of Independence MO, a man who was dedicated to his community, country, and family and lived a life of “Do it right the first time,” passed away on November 1, 2021 after a 2-year fight with lung cancer. Dan was born on January 6, 1937 in Lordsburg, New Mexico, to Charles and Betty Washburn. He joined the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for 12 years. On June 16, 1956, Dan married Ruth Bradford in Neosho, MO, and to this union 3 children were born: Steve, Jr., William, and Rebecca. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. Dan worked as a staging facility operations manager for the Federal Aviation Administration for 49 dedicated years. He spent his entire life in government service. For over 50 years, he was a proud Boy Scout and became a troop leader. Dan and Ruth were members of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Independence, MO for over 10 years. He enjoyed gardening and woodwork and was passionate about all that he did. Dan will always be remembered for being an amazing man who was straight spoken, yet so ornery and he will be sorely missed. Dan is survived by his sons, Steve Washburn, Jr. and wife, Peggy of Gardner, KS, and William Washburn of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Rebecca of Independence, MO; 6 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Ruth M. Washburn; parents, Charles E., and Betty E. Washburn.
A visitation to honor Dan will be held on Tuesday, November 9, from 6-8:00 p.m., at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. A funeral service will be held the following day, Wednesday, November 10, at 10:00 a.m., at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1400 W. Sheley Rd., Independence, MO 64052. Dan will be laid to rest at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. The family suggests contributions to be made to Boy Scouts of America Troop 282 (formerly troop 356).
