Mr. Waters was born on May 17, 1929 to John and Mary (Stimec) Waters in Emporia, Kansas. Al graduated from Sacred Heart primary school in 1944. He then attended Emporia High School and graduated in 1948. He received a degree in Business from Emporia College in 1952. He married Wilma Jarnevic on November 28, 1953. After several years as an accountant, he changed careers and followed his love for automobiles and enrolled in Diesel Mechanics school. Upon graduation in 1968, he worked for Caterpillar and, later, the City of Independence until his retirement in 1994.
He was a very devout and religious family man and was an active member of the Legion of Mary, holding numerous positions of responsibility within the organization. Throughout his life, he was willing to help anyone needing assistance and did so in a very quiet manner, never looking for recognition or praise. He loved and cared for his wife of 54 years until her death in 2007. He enjoyed working on cars and reading about all things mechanical. As a young man, he spent countless hours hunting and fishing. Later in life, he enjoyed stamp collecting and gardening. Albert spent many enjoyable hours taking his family on trips to various botanical gardens. He was very proud of his blackberries and strawberries that he grew in his backyard. Growing flowers, especially tulips, irises, posies, roses, and pink Belladonna lilies, was a favorite pastime. Many evenings were spent playing cards, and shooting the moon while playing Hearts. He devoted many hours making rosaries for Catholic missionaries around the world, producing thousands over his lifetime. He enjoyed attending the sporting events of his grandchildren whenever possible.
He is preceded in death by his wife, brothers John, Lawrence, and Frank, and sisters Helen and Mary Ann. He is survived by two sons, Jim Waters and wife Martha of Bremerton, WA and Bill Waters and wife Ann of Parkville, MO., one brother, Mike and his wife Viola, of Las Vegas, NV, and four grandchildren, Jon, Brendan, Ryan, and Sean Waters.
Brendan cared for Albert the last two years by driving him to the doctors, grocery shopping, mowing, house cleaning, and doing laundry. This allowed Albert to live at home for as long as possible. For this, the entire family is forever grateful. Finally, the family would like to thank the staff at Kansas City Hospice and Villa St. Francis for their love and care during our time of need.
