Joseph Clinton “J.C.” Waters, 70 of Chesapeake, VA, formerly of Independence, MO, passed away Feb. 14, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 pm, Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Stone Church, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64050; cremation.
J.C. was born Aug. 18, 1941 in Independence, MO and graduated from William Chrisman High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from CMSU and his Masters in Education from UMKC. He taught for many years in the Independence School district and retired from Truman High School in 1997. He also combined his love of sailing with business as the owner of Porte Des Voyageurs boat shop on Noland Road for thirty-five years. He realized his life-long dream by building the seventy-foot schooner, the Spirit of Independence, which was launched from Independence to charter on the East Coast. J.C. was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and had worked with the Boy Scouts Sea Explorers.
J.C. was preceded in death by brother Michael Waters. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years Marsha Waters, of the home; son Jarrod Waters and wife Melinda, Grain Valley, MO; daughters Janet Tracy and husband Carl, Independence, MO; Joy Waters, Chesapeake, VA; brother Paul Waters and wife Nancy, Overland Park, KS; and grandchildren Calvin, Megan, Alyson, Ethan and Elise.
