Wayne Edwin Whitehead, a cherished son, devoted husband, loving father, and respected member of his community, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, in Independence, Missouri. Born on April 9, 1947, in the same town where he would later build his life, Wayne’s journey was marked by his unwavering dedication to family, career, and service.
An industrious spirit, Wayne was meticulous and well organized, traits that resonated not only in his work but also in his personal life. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts, which laid the foundation for his many accomplishments. During his time in the Army, serving active duty stateside during the Vietnam War as a helicopter crew chief at Fort Carson from 1971 to 1972, he displayed remarkable leadership in reinvigorating the military’s filing system, ensuring peak efficiency in the office. He continued to be on reserve for his country from 1972-1976.
Wayne's professional life was a testament to his hard work and commitment. He began his career in commercial steel reinforcement, and over the years, he worked diligently to rise to the position of Senior Detailer for Whitecap, formerly known as Carter Waters. His contributions to the field were significant, and he retired with a legacy of integrity and excellence.
Wayne had a passion for various hobbies; he loved working on automobiles and remodeling houses, showing his creativity and skill in every endeavor. He was an avid sports fan, particularly fond of the KC Mavericks hockey team, and would often delight in attending games. His love for sports extended beyond hockey, as he found joy in watching all types of athletic competitions. Additionally, he cherished the tranquility of nature, often finding solace in the great outdoors, especially while canoeing. Wayne would often take time to hunt with his father during deer season, a tradition that brought them together and created lasting memories.
Family was at the heart of Wayne’s life, and his bond with them was deeply rooted. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Heather Felix, and her husband, Brian Felix. Wayne also had a close relationship with his brother, Ralph Edwin Whitehead. Each moment spent with his family was precious, and the memories they forged are woven into the fabric of their lives.
Wayne will always be remembered for his proudest moments, one of which was receiving his Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America in 1962. This accomplishment not only reflects his dedication to personal development but also his commitment to community and leadership—a legacy that he carried throughout his life.
Wayne is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet Whitehead, and his treasured parents, Ralph Whitehead and Mabel Ruth White. Their absence leaves a profound mark, yet they remain an integral part of Wayne’s narrative.
The community and family are invited to honor Wayne’s life at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Visitation will be held on December 19, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a graveside service on December 20, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
