Lenore Weeks (Brown)

Lenore Weeks, 99, formerly of Independence, Mo. passed away peacefully on January 4, 2016, at the Care Center at John Knox Village. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm, Friday, Jan. 29 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, Mo. 64055. Visitation will begin at 1 pm before the service at the chapel. Private inurnment was held earlier. In lieu of flowers, Lenore requested donations to Hope House or Good Shepherd Community of Christ.
Julia Lenore was born on April 3, 1916, in Orrick, Mo. to Elizabeth Frances (Tarwater) Brown and Roy Dale Brown.
She graduated from Wm. Chrisman High School in Independence, Mo. and attended Tennessee Women's College in Murfreesboro, Tenn. and William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
Lenore married her high school sweetheart, Philip K. Weeks, on February 28, 1937. She stayed at home and provided the essential foundation and support for her husband and children's active community life. She was the First Lady of Independence during her husband's four year term as Mayor (1970-1974).
Lenore was active herself in the community, and served as president of P.T.A., Independence Study Club and Independence Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of Independence Junior Service League, Jackson County Historical Society, Bingham-Waggoner Society, Community Association for the Arts, and of the Ambassador's Club and Resident Council at John Knox Village. Her service included 32 years as a volunteer receptionist at Independence Regional Hospital, volunteer work at the Community of Christ Temple, hosting the first American Field Service student at Truman High School and mentoring UMKC Medical School students.
Lenore's life was anchored by a solid religious faith that was expressed in membership in the congregation of the Good Shepherd Community of Christ.
She kept her mind sharp by staying in touch with world events, reading historical novels and playing bridge. She enjoyed travel and highlights included a trip to Israel and many winters with "snowbird" friends in Mesa, Arizona.
The center of Lenore's life was her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son-in-law, James Crisp. Her survivors include her three children: Lysle Weeks and wife Carolyn, of Independence; Phylis Crisp, Lake Ozark, Mo. and Marcy Brown and husband Mitch, of Independence; six grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren: Cyd Slayton and Madeline McDonough; Tamra and Jay Rembolt (Alex, Sarah and Caroline); Lisa and Mike Platt (Emily and Katie); Gabrielle Weeks-Skye and Coby Skye; Jaime Brown Simpson and David Simpson (Liz, Sam, Becca, Kate, Jessie and Joey); Philip and Molly Brown (Zeke); and Ryan Crisp and Marie Wynn (Kendra, Callie and Kori).
