Lula Mae (Lou) Welsh

Lula (Lou) Mae Welsh, 88, of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 6, 2006. She fought a brave fight with ovarian cancer. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 10th at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Visitation will be 2-4:00 p.m. Sunday, April 9th in the chapel. Burial in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Spellman St. Luke�s, Vicki Welsh Ovarian Cancer Fund, 5830 NW Barry Rd, Ste 105, Kansas City, MO 64154. Lou was born December 28, 1917 in Enid, OK to John W. and Ethel (Gladden) Jones. She married Wm. Robert Welsh on December 28, 1935, moving to Alexis, IL before relocating to Independence in 1948. Lou and Robert raised their six children, five sons: Robert and wife Donna of Kansas City, MO, James and wife Louanna of Independence, MO, John and wife Nancy of Independence, MO, and David of Blue Springs, MO. One daughter: Marge and husband Robert Mitchell of Wichita Falls, TX, and daughter-in-law Barbara Welsh of Independence, MO. Lou had two sisters and five brothers. She is survived by Harold V. Jones and wife Louise of Independence, MO, sister Dorothy Bunyard and husband Calvin of Independence, MO. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews. Lou was preceded in death by her husband Wm. Robert Welsh, son Larry Welsh, grandson Mark Welsh, daughter-in-law Vicki Welsh; four brothers and one sister. Lula Mae worked for Independence Regional Hospital for 17 years as a Nurse�s Aid before retiring. She then spent 20 years doing volunteer work, donating over 24000 hours making lap robes and baby blankets to be donated. Mrs. Welsh was recognized for her volunteer work by receiving many awards. Lou was a member of the ten gallon club with the Blood Bank. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. Lula Mae will be missed, she was a devoted and loving mother and friend. She will be seeing many friends and family members when the gates to heaven open for her.
