Ruth Welsh, 98, of Independence, MO passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014. A visitation will be held from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Monday, March 17, at Carson-Speaks Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will be at Mound Grove Cemetery. Ruth was born in the home on July 1, 1915 in Grinola, OK to Alva Melvin and Myrtle May (Bates) Taylor as one of five children. She attended Safford School in Tucson, Arizona before leaving to help her family during the Depression. Later, she raised five children and three grandchildren of her own while working at the Independence Sanitarium, first in laundry and finishing in the decontamination department. Ruth is a long time member of the RLDS, later Restoration Branch, and participated for many years at the Living Hope Congregation. She enjoyed playing Rummy with her friends Dorothy and Helen, crocheting fine handicrafts for her beloved family, reading mystery novels, and doting on her cat. Ruth is loved and will be missed. She is survived by daughters, Shirley Ann Young of Versailles, MO; Carole Jean Michaels (Bob) of Barnett, MO; Ruth Soldner (Art) of Independence, MO; and son, John Lightfoot of Independence, MO; twelve grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by husband Frank Welsh; daughter Phyllis May Rippy; siblings, Joe and Clarence Taylor, Eva Malchow, and Dottie Simmons.
