Manon Wheeler

Manon (Yahnig) Wheeler, 90, Independence, MO passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014.

Manon was born March 14, 1924 in Wilburton, OK the daughter of Henry and Florence (Hale) Yahnig. Manon was baptized into Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3), and was faithful throughout life to him in the Church he restored to the Earth in 1830. She graduated from Thayer High School and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA. Manon received her B.S. and M.S. from CMSU and UMKC. During WWII, Manon was a machinist making aircraft parts at Curtis Wright Aircraft in St. Louis, and also at North American Aircraft in Kansas City, KS.

She taught elementary classroom students for eight years, including being a reading specialist. The last 15 years she spent as a counselor before retiring in 1988. After retirement from Independence Public Schools, Manon volunteered at the Family Action Center in Kansas City, and the next five years volunteered at CPRS private school as a counselor. For the last twenty years, Manon has volunteered at Lunch Partners at the old William Chrisman High School, helping prepare food for the needy. Manon enjoyed teaching classes at church, and was a Cub Scout den mother and a wonderful story teller at vacation church school.

Survivors include her loving husband, David Wheeler; sons, Gary Wheeler, James Wheeler; daughter, Karen Brown (Dennis); grandchildren, Isaac Wheeler, Becca Whitaker (John), James Wheeler (Bree), Jared Wheeler, Matthew Brown, and Aaron Brown; great grandchildren, Karlee, Karter, Jackson, and Dakota; sisters, Clara VanBiber, Dorothy Brockman; and brother, David Yahnig (Mary). David and Manon welcomed numerous friends into their home that became family. Among them, Chalia Castillo Moreira and husband Plutarco from Honduras and their children David, Melisa, and Julie.

Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mound Grove Cemetery.
