Harlin “A” Whiting was born on April 12th 1930 in Independence Missouri to Rodrick and Greta Young Whiting. He married Lea Johnson on June 25th 1955 in Lawrence Kansas. He has 2 brothers Raymond (who passed away in 2011) and wife Jeanie, Leonard and wife Carolyn and 1 sister, Barbara Riffle and husband John. He has 3 daughters Karen Whiting Tanner, Paula Whiting, and Brenda Whiting Byrd; 4 grand-children Justin Mooney and wife Alissa, Troy Mooney, Jake Byrd and Madison Byrd; 1 great grandchild Joliana Mooney. Harlin served in the Coast Guard from 1950 to 1953 as a Damage Control specialist then was employed as a truck driver with Inter-City Freight Lines in Independence for 30 years. He lived in Independence for several years and then moved to Harrisonville Missouri where he built a house for his family. Upon retirement, Harlin and Lea moved into a RV and traveled the country for 8 years. After their adventures, they moved back to Independence Missouri. Harlin was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and spending time outdoors. He spent a lot of time at the lake house he built in the Ozarks. He enjoyed photography, especially taking pictures of nature. Harlin was a man of many talents. He repaired cars, built houses, barns and rebuilt tractors. Harlin was also known for his sense of humor and playfulness. He passed away on July 5, 2012. He will be missed. A memorial celebration will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, at New Walnut Park Community of Christ Church, 1137 S. Pearl, Independence, MO 64050. The family suggests donations to Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or Outreach International.
