William “Bill” Dycus, 82, of Lee’s Summit, MO, died July 28th, 2024.
Bill was born in Galena, MO on September 27, 1941. He grew up in Kansas City, MO and graduated from Paseo High School. He obtained a Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration in 1973 and a Masters of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration in 1977. Bill joined the KCMO Police Dept in 1960 at the age of 19, as a Police Tow Truck Driver. When he was 21, he joined the Police Academy and became a Patrolman. Bill was a member of KCPD’s first Helicopter Unit in 1967. He later served in the Personnel Division, then as a Sergeant in the Metro Patrol, Internal Affairs and Crimes vs Property Divisions. In 1976 at the rank of Captain, he was Watch Commander of the North Patrol Division. Bill earned the rank of Major in 1985 and helped create the first automated fingerprint system. He retired in 1989 after 26 years of service. Bill maintained close relationships with the Police officers he served with throughout the rest of his life.
Bill met his wife Nancy on a blind date in 1963 and they were married on June 27, 1964. Bill and Nancy were together for 60 years until her death in January 2024. They shared wonderful dinners with the “Square Bunch”, played cards with other police retirees, and occasionally swapped stories over a fine bourbon. Bill enjoyed cooking and often tried out new recipes on friends and family. They doted on their children and loved their grandkids unconditionally.
Bill is survived by his son Sean Dycus (Lees Summit, Mo) and Kim (Marlin) Mangels (Pullman, WA), along with grandchildren Shannon Dycus, Ryan Dycus, Carson Mangels and Alison Mangels. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Nancy Dycus and his parents, William and Ova Dycus.
A visitation will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055 on Tuesday, August 6th, 2024. The family will greet guests between the hours of 9:30am - 11:00am. Burial will follow visitation and begin at 11:30am and he will be alongside Nancy in the Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggest donations to be made in Bills honor to National Kidney Association.
