Daniel Wilson, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the nursing home of the Rehabilitation Center of Independence. Services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 20 at the Second Baptist Church, 3620 E. 39th St., Kansas City, MO 64128; interment with Full Military Honors will be at 2 p.m., Monday at the Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery, Higginsville, MO. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. before the service at church. Daniel was a strong Christian man of faith and maintained his faith and strength until the very end. He had touched several lives through song at the nursing home.
Daniel Wilson was born November 27, 1927 in Homer, Louisiana to Prote and Lenora Wilson. He later moved to Coweta, Oklahoma to live with his uncle, John Wilson. Daniel attended school in Coweta, Kemper and Red Bird, Oklahoma. As a young man, he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and was drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Korean War, and was Honorably Discharged after two years of service. Daniel worked for Columbia Steel Company for 17 years until his early retirement. Daniel was a member of the James McCurry Knights of Pythias, Lodge No 84. He was a member of Second Baptist Church for over 30 years and a Deacon for 25 years. He was active in many auxiliaries, including the Celestial Choir for many years. He also serviced the transportation ministry, and was a member of the Social Services Committee. Daniel always made himself available to all who were in need.
Daniel met Shirley Young in 1965 and they were soon married. To this union two children were born, Danielle Wilson of Kansas City, MO and Daniel Wilson, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA. Daniel has two children from a previous marriage, Allen Wilson, (Florence), Joetta Wilson, and a step-daughter Brenda Davis, all of Kansas City, MO.
Preceding Daniel in death are his parents, Prote and Lenora Wilson, three sisters, Bertha McDaniel, Mattie Wilson and Ruth McKittrick. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 49 years, Shirley Wilson, his children, a sister, Lillian Love and a brother, James Wilson both of Oklahoma, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
