Joe Yeager

July 19, 1950 — December 28, 2020

Joe Yeager passed away Monday, December 28, 2020, at the age of 70. He was born on July 19, 1950, in Sedalia, MO to James Richard and Mary Lou (Witte) Yeager.

He was a speed record on two wheels. If he broke the record one weekend he would break it again the next weekend. Joe was named NMRA’s Sportsman of the Year after capping off an unprecedented 5-0 year for the Super Modified Championship in the drag racing world. And it just wasn’t drag racing. He could do it all – motocross, TT racing or flat track. One night he raced in three classes (125, 250, and Open) one class right after another. His mechanic would be on the starting line warming up the bike for the next class up. Joe went out and put a real whippin’ on everybody there – all three classes!

Joe was a metal finisher by trade and was responsible for a lot of shiny chrome on motorcycles and custom cars. He was as serious about his metal polishing as he was about his racing.

Joe graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1968. On November 23, 1981, he married Nancy Welch in Independence, MO.

Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home; son, Larry (Jan) Yeager, Sedalia, MO; daughter, Michelle (Alex) Wilson, Belton, MO; grandchildren, James (Amber) Yeager, Sedalia, MO; Lauren (Trevor), Sedalia, MO; Andy Owen, Raymore, MO; Jacinda Kelley and Jasmine Kelley; great grandchildren, Brayton and Lainey Yeager and James Owen; brother, Rick (Jennifer) Yeager, Sedalia, MO; sister, Sharon (Ted) Twyman, Sedalia, MO; Uncle John (Martha) Witte, Sedalia, MO; Aunt Bette Ruth Dowland, Sedalia, MO.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Andrea Yeager, niece Carrie Yeager and grandparents Gus and Nona Mae Witte, Joe and Carrie Yeager.

Due to the circumstances that COVID has created, there will be no service at this time. However, we want to celebrate our wonderful husband, brother, father, and friend. So please be watching for news later this summer as we make plans to gather and embrace, and ride to remember our Joe.
