Daniel W. Young, 69, Independence, MO, formerly of Kansas City, MO, passed away Jan. 1, 2014. Services will be at 2 pm, Thursday, Jan. 9 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055; interment at Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Camp Doniphan, .
Dan was born July 6, 1944 in Kansas City, MO was a lifelong area resident. After graduating from Shawnee Missions North High School he earned a Bachelor degree in Geography and a minor in Political Science from Kansas State University. He taught in the Kansas City School district. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was an Eagle Scout and served as an Executive Leader on the District Committee for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a deacon at the Ridgewood Congregation Community of Christ, sang in the Messiah Choir for twenty years, was a member of the Kansas City Men’s Chorus, served as a docent at the K.C. Zoo and was a Master Gardener. He was also an expert on earthquakes who gave presentations to many area organizations. Dan is survived by daughters Sherri Cobb and husband Jim, Greenwood, MO; Marcia West and husband Taylor, Peculiar, MO; brother Donald Young, Gladstone, MO and four grandchildren.
