Everett Boyd Young, 86, passed away on May 31, 2020, in Warrensburg, MO.
Everett was born on November 20, 1933, in Napoleon, MO, the son of Henry Gleason Young and Ida Mae Krutzman Young. Everett grew up in the Odessa area, and went to high school in Carrollton. After he received his mother’s blessing, he and a few of his high school friends enlisted in the United States Army, where he was a military policeman during the Korean War. He endured traveling to faraway lands, frostbite, shrapnel injuries, and even malaria – but he was fortunate to come home with honorable discharge after three years of service. He married Dorothy Dean Withrow on March 27, 1954, and they immediately began raising a family – first Larry, in 1955, then Russell, in 1957.
Everett worked for Jack Cooper as a truck driver for a few years, then for Ford as an assembly line supervisor. While at Ford, he was also able to earn his GED. In 1965, he started his own filling station, Young 66, in Independence, and it remained in operation for nearly 20 years. He also did work for Carl’s Radiator as a supervisor, handyman, and mentor.
Due to the fact that Everett’s father passed at a very young age, Everett learned early on the necessity of hunting and fishing so the family could have food on the table. He remained an avid hunter of deer and squirrel - particularly in Cameron - and loved to fish for bass and catfish at Lake Jacomo, Swan Lake, and Lake Pomme de Terre. He and Dorothy had a very strong faith and would often do Bible study in the comfort of their living room. Everett was stubborn, opinionated, and a straight-shooter, but could also be a charmer and a crack-up. He and Dorothy had kind hearts, who would give and donate at every opportunity.
Survivors include his two sons Larry Young (wife Benita) and Russell Young (wife Donna); grandchildren Sara Young (Scott Homfeld), Wesley Young (wife Krissa), Shannon Burris, and Paul Loyd; great-grandchildren Cole Homfeld, Cody Homfeld, Travis Young, Mackenzie Young, Chrystal Loyd, Jessica Loyd, Dusty Loyd, Hunter Loyd, Jason Loyd, Hailey Loyd, Madison Burris, Adelyn Loyd, Kyle Loyd, Camden Loyd, and Wade Loyd; sisters Fern Reynolds and Bernice Stutzman; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Dean Young; his parents Henry and Mae Young; and his brothers Dempsey, Harrison, and Jeff Young.
Private services are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel. Interment with military honors will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
