PHILLIP MICHAEL ZAPIEN
Phillip “Big Phil” Zapien, 27, of Independence, MO passed away suddenly on Friday, February 24, 2017. A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00pm on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Carson-Speaks Chapel 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO, 64052. A service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the chapel. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Phil was born on September 22, 1989 in North Kansas City, MO to Henry and Roberta Zapien. Even as a small child, he filled everyone’s hearts with joy. At 15 years old he began a career at Worlds of Fun in the landscaping department where he worked for 12 seasons. He worked as a part-time cashier at Price Chopper in Lees Summit where he loved visiting with customers and had several opportunities to meet Chiefs players. Phil loved his sports: Chiefs, Royals, Mavericks, Jayhawks, and NASCAR - especially Jeff Gordon. Phil loved country music and listened to it while washing his car.
Left behind to mourn his loss but cherish his memory are his parents Henry and Roberta of the home; maternal grandparents Bobby and Dorothy Lewellen of Osceola, MO; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; lifelong best friends- his brothers- Kaelan McDaniel and wife Kristen, Chet McDaniel and wife Chelsea. He touched so many lives and was loved by many others around the community.
Phil was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Rudolph and Shirley Zapien.
